Michael Herwitz
Theater Director
Michael directs new plays and musicals in New York City and beyond. He is currently represented Off-Broadway with Spare Parts, now playing at Theater Row. Upcoming projects include Casey and Diana at American Players Theatre and a new play by Max Wolf Friedlich.
Michael is frequently found pouring over pages of a gutsy new play, dreaming up a revival of a favorite musical, or standing on his tiptoes leading a rehearsal room. He creates work that is muscular, provocative, and beautiful. A ferocious defender of the fourth wall, Michael believes every second act deserves a dream ballet.
Born and raised outside New York City, Michael began his career as a child actor on Broadway. Inspired by the Broadway stage managers who entertained his every question, Michael developed a passion for making the plays he wanted to see. From LaGuardia Arts High School to Northwestern University, Michael honed his craft as a dramaturg on new plays, a world builder of epic musicals, and an administrator through G45 Productions, an ensemble-based collective dedicated to incubating new work. His credits include the Broadway and Off-Broadway productions of Max Wolf Friedlich’s JOB, the world or US premieres of Spare Parts by David J. Glass, Vermont, India by Luca Milstein, Cold Water by Philippa Lawford, and Dance Dance Revolution by Ethan Fuirst. Michael has developed new work with Ars Nova, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Carnegie Mellon University, Ensemble Studio Theater, Fault Line Theater, Martha's Vineyard Playhouse, University of Michigan, Pasadena Playhouse, People’s Light, Powerhouse Theater, and the Williamstown Theater Festival. He has projects in development with SoHo Rep and Noisemaker. Michael is a member of SDC and is represented by United Talent Agency.
